Youth leaders play a crucial role in ensuring that participants are well-prepared, supported, and engaged throughout the exchange.

1. Overview of Erasmus+ Youth Exchanges

  • Purpose and Goals: Erasmus+ Youth Exchanges aim to bring young people from different countries together to learn about each other’s cultures, develop new skills, and engage in non-formal education activities. These exchanges promote intercultural understanding, personal development, and active citizenship. By participating in these exchanges, young people enhance their social, civic, and intercultural competencies, which are crucial for their personal and professional growth.
  • Structure and Activities: Youth Exchanges typically involve a series of workshops, activities, and cultural events designed to encourage learning and interaction among participants. The exchanges are often hosted by youth organizations or educational institutions. Activities may include team-building exercises, discussions on social issues, cultural nights, field trips, and creative projects. These activities are designed to be engaging, educational, and fun, providing participants with a well-rounded experience.
  • Eligibility and Funding: Youth Exchanges are open to young people aged 13-30. The program covers travel, accommodation, and activity costs, making it accessible to participants from diverse backgrounds. Funding is provided by the European Union, ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent participation. The application process typically involves partnering with a sending organization, which helps facilitate the exchange and provides support throughout the process.

2. The Role of the Youth Leader in Preparing Participants

  • Participant Selection: Carefully help organisation to select participants based on their interests, motivations, and potential to benefit from the experience. Consider diversity in terms of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. Selection criteria may include enthusiasm for intercultural learning, willingness to engage actively in activities, and the ability to work collaboratively in a diverse group setting. 
  • Pre-Departure Orientation: With the help of organisations, organize orientation sessions to provide participants with essential information about the exchange, including the itinerary, objectives, and expectations. Discuss cultural norms, language basics, and practical details such as travel arrangements. Orientation sessions should also cover topics like health and safety, emergency contacts, and tips for adapting to a new cultural environment. The youth leader is co-responsible for preparing and delivering these sessions, ensuring that all participants are well-informed and ready for the exchange.
  • Intercultural Learning: Facilitate intercultural learning activities to help participants understand and appreciate cultural differences. Encourage open-mindedness, empathy, and respect for diverse perspectives. Activities may include discussions on cultural stereotypes, role-playing scenarios, and sharing personal experiences.
